La notte del 28 febbraio al Dolby theatre di Los Angeles si è tenuta l’88ª edizione dei premi Oscar. Il caso Spotlight, il film che racconta l’inchiesta del Boston globe sulla pedofilia nella chiesa cattolica a Boston, ha vinto il premio per il miglior film.
Leonardo DiCaprio ha vinto il suo primo Oscar, quello per il miglior attore protagonista in Revenant - Redivivo. Brie Larson è stata premiata come miglior attrice protagonista per Room.

L’Oscar per la regia è andato ad Alejandro Gonzales Iñárritu per Revenant - Redivivo. Ennio Morricone ha vinto il premio per la miglior colonna sonora, quella del film Hateful eight di Quentin Tarantino. Anche per lui è stato il primo Oscar, dopo quello alla carriera ricevuto nel 2007.
